Despite the wide variety of materials which can go into a garage door, they all need to be properly maintained in order to keep up the appearance of the home. In the case of steel and aluminum garage doors this includes painting them and cleaning them a few times per year. Glass garage doors do not need to be painted, but do require frequent cleaning. Wood doors can be painted or finished, but need that maintenance.
Steel garage doors need to be painted in order to protect them from the elements. The steel can corrode if exposed. Before painting, it is recommended that the homeowner clean the doors to a more polished appearance. The best cleaners can be bought at a store, as long as they are approved for use on steel garage doors and mixed with the appropriate amount of water. Another option is to make your own cleaning solution. To make it, dilute one cup of ammonia in five gallons of lukewarm water, and wash it into the door. A simple water washing will also remove any layers of dirt packed into the door.
Maintaining and painting an aluminum garage door has a very similar process. Use an outdoor acrylic latex paint and apply it to the clean aluminum surface. The main difference between the two is that an aluminum door tends to be more durable than a steel one, and does not rust or corrode if it is not painted. However, many homeowners prefer to paint it anyway.
Glass garage doors are much less flimsy than their name would imply. They are often built with an aluminum frame for increased durability and are coated to keep people from being able to see into the garage for privacy. The smears will show more than on the other three materials, so it is very important that the homeowner be proactive and use the recommended types of cleaning products to upkeep their new door.
The final common material is the wooden garage door. First, clean the door to remove any residue, then paint it with a standard wood paint variety or use a weatherproof finish to bring out the natural grains. Do so, on both sides, for maximum protection against cracking and water seepage.
The way to upkeep a garage door may vary slightly with the material used to build it but what is most important is that the homeowner remains committed to the door and takes the time to clean, and paint it as necessary.
